Types of Italian Driver’s Licenses
In Italy, there are several categories of driver’s licenses, each corresponding to different types of vehicles. These categories align with EU regulations and are as follows:
Category AM – Moped License: This is the most basic license, allowing individuals to operate mopeds (2-wheeled vehicles with a displacement not exceeding 50cc). It can be obtained from the age of 14.
Category A1 – Motorcycle License (Light Motorcycles): This allows individuals to drive motorcycles with an engine size of up to 125cc and a maximum power of 11 kW. The minimum age to apply for this license is 16.
Category A2 – Motorcycle License (Medium Motorcycles): This permits the holder to operate motorcycles with a maximum power of 35 kW. The minimum age for obtaining this license is 18.
Category A – Motorcycle License (Heavy Motorcycles): This license is for motorcycles with a power output above 35 kW. The minimum age to obtain this license is 24, or 20 if the applicant has held an A2 license for at least two years.
Category B – Car License: This is the most common driver’s license for personal cars and light vehicles with a maximum weight of 3.5 tons. The minimum age for obtaining this license is 18.
Category C – Truck License: This allows individuals to drive larger commercial vehicles and trucks with a weight exceeding 3.5 tons.
Category D – Bus License: This is for driving buses and vehicles designed to carry more than 9 passengers.
Category E – Combination License: This license is for driving combinations of vehicles, such as a truck with a trailer.
